Dean first picked up the guitar aged 11 and he’s never looked back! He played his first professional gig at the age of 12, and he has gigged professionally ever since.
Having gained a music degree at the London College of Music, he moved back to Maryport and formed a blues/rock/jazz band called Secure Unit. He is also a member of the West Coast Jazz trio and rock band AWOL, as well as frequently playing in pit bands for musicals. He is hugely talented and extremely versatile – in demand both as a session musician and a guitar teacher.
At this year’s Bowness Bay Blues festival, Dean will be playing an acoustic set, combining his rock, blues and jazz influences and demonstrating his flair as a vocalist as well as a guitarist.
Growing up in the sleepy county of Lincolnshire music was one thing that held my attention. After experimenting with piano and drums I eventually found myself strapped onto an electric guitar. Drawn to the Blues music my parents introduced me to, (by artists such as Muddy Waters, Son House and Albert King), I realised that the music I wanted to play was that of substance and meaning. I wanted to be involved in creating a sound that transcended the narrow and manufactured music I had previously been exposed to. Upon leaving the Sam Newsom Music College I realised that in order to do this the focus needed on the song rather than trying to cram in flashy guitar solos.
2016 sees the Spring release of Ash’s debut album featuring Phil Wilson on drums (Jesse Davey, Laurence Jones), Roger Inniss on Bass (Laurence Jones) and Bob Fridzema on Keys (KING KING) as well as special guest Jesse Davey on the song “The Hitcher”. Ash will be touring the album later in the year as the Ash Wilson Band.
The Blind Dead McJones Band were brought together in 2008 by Blues Legend Blind Dead McJones. He educated them in his ways of Blues and life only to then leave then repeatedly stranded at showtime. The boys became proficient at putting on a show in their leaders absence and now many years down the line The Blind Dead McJones Band have established themselves without their frontman. Taking the blues lessons and history learnt from McJones and infusing it with their youthful energy and enthusiasm they have created a sound wholly their own as well as becoming a unique and exciting live act. Their two studio albums “Last Resort Mexico” (2012) and “Everybody’s Making Lemonade” (2015) received high praise from around the world and they were finalists in the original song catergory of the 2013 British Blues Awards. Every show is exciting and rumors still circulate that McJones will appear with them again soon.
Broken Levee are quickly evolving into a stylish and charismatic blues trio. They continue to entice audiences across the North East with their vibrant and energetic performances that include both, inspiring and creative original compositions and covers of classic blues repertoire.
Their sound echoes the great American and British blues acts but also delivers a unique and rich new take on the genre. The band are constantly drawing influence from an eclectic range of artists from jazz, funk, soul, rock and indeed the blues!
David Bass & The Revolving Door Band

Goofa Dust are a new powerful rhythm blues roots band. Blending a mix of British pub blues/rock, Wilco, Dr Feelgood and American Blues, The Red Devils, Fabulous Thunderbirds. From Ipswich they feature some of the finest blues musicians in the UK.

Bristol-based blues band Husky Tones are a band keen to find their own way in the rich and varied blues world having been described as ‘exciting’ ‘inventive’ and ‘a breath of fresh air’. Fronted by singer drummer Victoria Bourne their critically acclaimed debut album ‘Time for a Change’ covers a variety of themes from the highly personal (failed marriage, criminal ancestry) to the universal (struggling to pay bills, fighting against bad luck). Maharaja Blues is the culmination of the flow of three talented rivers, Richard, Jonathan and Satinder as they merge with the great Mississippi, fusing the sound of the beating tabla with the euphoric slide blues and the fire of the harmonica. During 2011 the duo started to perform more frequently together and their sound was greatly received. They released an EP. This EP commemorates and celebrates the distinctive sound produced by the combination of the duo’s rhythm and harmony, as well as the good times had during this period. In 2014 Jonathan became the third tributary to flow into the blues water of this musical river.
Influenced by Jools Holland, soul and blues artists past and present, The Blues Brothers and The Commitments, with a few well known Ska tracks thrown in along the way “
Now slimmed down to a four piece, and with stunning new guitarist WALLY RUMSEY, bassist HADGE WELLER, vocalist ALEC MARTIN and phenomenal drummer ROB PUSEY, Night Train are back….although they never really went away!
Secure Unit are not your average blues/rock outfit. They are a vastly experienced power trio who can take you on a musical journey through blues, jazz, rock, fusion and country, all in one song!
Dean Newton (lead guitarist/vocalist) has been a regular on the local gig circuit since the age of 12 with rock band AWOL. He studied at the London College of Music, where he was taught by some of Britain’s top guitarists. His playing style is enormously versatile and his musical influences include Guthrie Govan, Francis Dunnery, Gary Moore, Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, Joe Pass and Wes Montgomery.
Drummer Frank Hall needs no introduction. A Cumbrian legend, Frank is best known as former drummer with the band Necromandus, who were rated by some of rock’s aristocracy in their 1970s heyday. The band played with Black Sabbath and were taken under the wing of the band’s guitarist Tony Iommi. Frank also played with Ozzy Osbourne in his band, Blizzard of Ozz.
On bass is Gordon Colquitt, who has over 40 years’ experience playing in West Cumbrian bands.
And on keyboards Secure Unit have another musical legend – composer, pianist and percussionist John Marcangelo, who collaborated with Mik Kaminski in the 1970s in Violinski. John is probably best known as the composer of the Violinski hit ‘Clog Dance’, which reached the charts in 1979. The song has since been used on the soundtrack for the hugely successful film ‘Brassed Off’.
The Steve Fulsham Band play classic rock and blues like we mean it, which is easy because we do! Based in the City of Culture 2017 , we play a wide range of blues-rock styles: from 60’s British, through swaggerin’ Texan, all the way to all-guns-blazing 70’s stadium rock, while covering, as The Reverend Billy Gibbons put it: “all points in between…” Amongst the classics are our own numbers, five of which feature on our CD‘On Fire’ ; all composed by Steve.
Are a contemporary blues band known for fusing elements of blues, rock, psychedelic rock, funk and jazz. Fresh, on the edge, heavy on improvisation, but you’ll still hear the influences of greats such as Led Zep, Cream, Hendrix, Muddy Waters, Freddie King and Howlin’ Wolf.
